Music
Music starts with listening – in our lower grade orchestra in grades 5 and 6: what does a trumpet sound like, a cello or a harp? And in listening to the instrument’s voices – exact listening is called for: am I too high or too low?
Music starts with singing – in our lower grade orchestra in grades 5 and 6: single notes, short musical motifs and singing full melodies, and later not only monophonic but even polyphonic.
Music at Zinzendorf schools
Music begins in rehearsals and practicing, and practicing and rehearsals. There are no shortcuts, it is still discipline and personal commitment are asked for. Music begins with rehearsals – but it ends in great projects, for example musicals by the lower grade choir or concert trips or special concerts – there is always something going on with the wind orchestra, school choir, school orchestra or jazz band.
All students from all school branches at the Zinzendorf Schools can participate. The best trumpeter at the school at the moment is at the middle school the best clarinetist is at the vocational school, the best drummer is at the social pedagogical high school and the best flutist is from the general high school – the mixture makes the difference! Additionally there are the musical colleagues and of course the parents who play and sing along as well. We could still use a bugle, a bassoon or a tenor.
In every music class we sing – songs are a treasure to carry for a life-time and we have our class instruments: glockenspiel for the lower grades and guitars for the middle grades.
Listening to music, understanding it, playing and performing music: that reaches the students holistically – not only in their head but also in their hearts. Music invigorates and is fun.
